The Magic of Sacred Self Care

Guest Blogs for December

Are you always giving to others? Do you put everyone else’s needs ahead of your own?

Do any of these words resonate with you? Drained? Stuck? Unhappy? Misunderstood? Unworthy? Unappreciated? Run down? Exhausted?

You may resonate more strongly after as the holidays we tend to neglect our own needs even more.

When you feel good, you may not mind giving. But when you don’t have the energy, you wonder how much more you can give. When the tank is empty, you begin to feel resentful, or just get sick. And then you feel guilty for that.

It's important to know that you have not only physical energy, but also emotional, mental and spiritual energy that needs to be replenished. All of the tanks need to be constantly refilled, easily and joyfully.

I know for me, in the past, I wanted the holidays to be super special. Each year had to be better than the previous. We did all of the activities: Santa at the Zoo, Holiday Concerts, presents for everyone (some, handmade), decorating the house, hosting visitors, etc. -all while working full time. Up to a certain point, I was fine, but when my kids complained about something minor, I’d over-react.  I was so busy living up to the expectations of others… more importantly, what I thought they expected of me, that I didn’t have time to take care of myself.  I was resentful because everyone else had a wonderful holiday and I felt drained and underappreciated.

By the end of the holidays you may be feeling fed up, tired and/or wanting to escape. You could be experiencing feeling heavy or stuck. Have you ever said, “I wish I didn’t have to do this thing.” When you feel like you don’t have a choice, you can begin to feel resentful, which can turn into anger.  If you are stuck you may have some mental or emotional experiences that are keeping you from feeling grace, ease, and joy. And I can help you get unstuck by finding beliefs and behaviors that keep you from feeling like you have the freedom to make life affirming choices.

You may feel like your energy is drained. Why is that? Well, over the day, our mental and emotional energy can either leak out or flow to another person. When we are not aware of this energy or how it moves, we can be left drained and exhausted. I know about this one because my relationship with my daughter was killing me. My vital energy was going from me to her. I was exhausted and had nothing for me. And I can help you understand how energy moves and how you can keep and replenish your vital energy.

Self appreciation practices are essential because you are important. While self care is being talked about in popular culture, what they miss is the sacredness of self care. As divine beings, we need to add a level of intention and ritual that fills us in a way that is deep and fulfilling. By connecting to joy and the divine, you are able to fill those tanks and also set loving boundaries that keep you in the flow of the universe. Also, you are appreciating yourself for all of you, even the bumps and warts. We are perfect in our imperfection.

What are you going to do after the holidays to refill your tank? Practical and Sacred Self Care Rituals and Sundries is a 6 month series that starts the last Thursday in January. The goal of the series to prepare your heart to connect with the higher facets of the Cosmic Heart.  In addition to examining where you are and how you go there, we will make unique, sacred gifts like sprays, shower salts, etc, that will help you reinforce your commitment to self appreciation. I look forward to seeing you. Janice Dau
