Meet the Two Royal Couples of the Tarot
In the tarot, there are two royal couples. They are the Magician and the High Priestess and the Empress and the Emperor. All four cards are near the beginning of the majors, and each couple has its own special message.
The Magician and the High Priestess
The Magician and the High Priestess ask you to manifest things on the ethereal plane. The Magician helps you gather mental (sword), emotional (water), physical (earth), and energetic (fire) resources as if by magic. The Magician’s message is that things are “coming together” for you, but because the Magician is magical, you may not quite know how or when they’ll come together.
The High Priestess asks you to tap into your intuition and honor both your conscious and subconscious mind. She encourages you to find balance and to make sure you aren’t sacrificing intuitive knowing for more rational thinking.
The underlying message of the Magician and the High Priestess is trust. Trust that the Magician is bringing resources together for you, even if you can’t see them. Trust that the High Priestess has your best interest in mind through intuitive hits and a balanced mindset.
The Empress and Emperor
The Empress and Emperor ask you to manifest things on the physical plane. When you think of an empress or emperor, do you think of people in velvet robes sitting on thrones and presiding over kingdoms? Empresses and Emperors rule over kingdoms on earth, whereas the Magician and the High Priestess rule over the more ethereal world.
The Empress asks you to nurture and be patient. Often, she is pictured as a pregnant woman sitting on a throne in a field. She may also be shown in a garden surrounded by small animals. The Empress cares for herself (and her growing child), waters, and tends to plants, but knows that it will take time for her baby and recently planted seeds to mature.
The Emperor asks you to lead, provide for, and protect your kingdom. He asks you to surround yourself with wise mentors and allies. Emperors were charged with providing stability and safety to ensure the survival of the kingdom’s people. Emperors may be the ones making decisions, but they rarely ruled alone; they needed a counsel to help them manage vast lands and make sure that people were cared for in times of hardship or conflict.
The Empress and Emperor ask you to nurture something other than yourself. They ask you to patiently care for those in your kingdom. The Empress asks you to nurture yourself and your environment so that it may, in turn, nurture you. The Emperor asks you to nurture your leadership and collaboration skills so you and those around you can feel stable and secure.
The two royal couples of the tarot ask you to do the same thing: manifest. The Magician and the High Priestess make things happen on the ethereal plane while the Empress and Emperor are focused on matters here on earth.
