The Key to Valentine's is Self-Love
As consumers, we tend to lavish our loved ones with chocolates, flowers, and other tokens of love to let them know they are important to us. It is great to be able to express our love on this special day in February and it can even bring us joy to see others react to our expressions of love. There definitely can be magic in the exchange; but what will you do when the flowers die, or the chocolates run out?
Remember in this year of living with intention, you want to make sure that you are loving yourself. Women are socialized to be generous givers and nurturers, but we are not often told that the key to being able to shower others with love is to make sure that we are not giving from an empty cup. Somehow, we are socialized to believe that being in love with yourself is not acceptable.
However, I think it is crucial to love unconditionally and to do that, you must start with you. Here are three tips to be your best Valentine ever.
1. This year instead of waiting for a valentine; write yourself a magical journal entry relegating the reasons and ways that you are absolutely loveable. List the talents, gifts, and interests that make you unique. This is not about being a narcissist or egocentric; it is about appreciating who you are. Putting it on paper helps you gain another perspective. Perhaps it will even help you to see how others see you.
2. Be mindful of your self-talk. Would you talk to your best friend as harshly as you talk to yourself? I have never had a friend say I look fat in my jeans! Yet I have mumbled that to myself in the mirror. Remember that you are the perfect embodiment of a spirit having a human experience. You don’t have to rely on someone else to tell you how amazing you are. Make sure that you are reinforcing those amazing gifts and talents you are blessed with daily. Look into the mirror and say “I love you” each day. Loving yourself is the most powerful gift as it ensures that in your year of living with intention, you will generate more love because it will radiate from within.
3. Feel free to buy yourself flowers if they bring you joy. Flowers have beautiful vibrations of color and fragrance that can fill our space with wonderful energy. There is no need to rely on someone else to provide this for you. If you see flowers you like, buy them for yourself and put them in a special vase. Pamper yourself and your space and bring joy to yourself any day of the year.
This month I will be hosting an ARTshop on February 4 at Discover Your Spiritual Gifts. We will do a light mediation, some self-reflection, and create strategies of self-love. We will create a key in a bottle to remind you that self-love is the key to intentional living.
