Business Corner: Setting Healthy Boundaries

What does it mean to set healthy boundaries for your business?

When you own your own business, it can become all-encompassing in your life. You are directly responsible for the success and failure of your business. It can be a lot of pressure.

Take the time to consider these areas:

• Your time
• Your expertise
• Your resources
• Your customers/clients/students

YOUR TIME

How much of your time is going to be devoted to your business? It is important to understand that you have a limited supply of time and energy. If you deplete all your energy sources, you will not be valuable to anyone.

How much time per day/week will you spend on your business? The more time you invest in your business, the more you will reap. There must be a healthy balance. An individual spending eight hours or less on their business each week is going to attract less business than the individual that is investing forty hours a week on their business.

I have noticed that those spending only a few hours a week on their business struggle with creating enough energetic movement to build a successful business. It takes dedication and work to be successful. Create a plan and stick to your commitment to the business.

YOUR EXPERTISE

When you are putting your passion to work for you in a business, you will need to have a unique and competitive edge that will separate you from the pack. You cannot copy another business and be successful. There is no magic mold for success.

You will need to be flexible, creative, and unique when launching your business. Many business owners do not have a basic understanding of what works and what doesn’t work for their business.

• What products sell the most/least?
• What services sell the most/least?
• How does your pricing compare to others?
• What is your pricing strategy?

YOUR RESOURCES

You will need a budget and/or plan for your business. What are your financial resources for your business? Do you know your costs compared to your revenue?

It is important to have a plan for your resources.

There needs to be a solid boundary regarding your investment. You should be evaluating costs, expenditures, and revenue streams monthly to ensure you are staying within your investment boundaries. Everyone has seen an increase in costs across the board. Have you re-evaluated and adjusted your pricing structures for your business? This will need to be done on a regular basis to ensure you are staying within the boundaries set for your business.

CUSTOMERS/CLIENTS/STUDENTS

You will not be the answer for everyone. Who is your customer? Everyone has different needs and expectations. Here are some of the considerations for choosing products and services:

• Pricing
• Value
• Service
• Responsiveness
• Ease of use
• Location
• Relationship with owner/business

There will also be opportunities when the customer is not aligned with you and/or your business. Some business owners are desperate, and they will take on business that is not aligned with their expertise. This leads to dissatisfied customers. In these situations, you should refer business to someone that has the expertise needed to serve the individual. They will think of you in return when someone comes along that needs your expertise.

Make sure you are setting healthy boundaries for yourself and your business.
