The Magic Sky: What is Astrology For, Anyway?
Whenever I start astrology sessions with a new client, I ask, “What are your expectations of our work together?” Some people are open-ended. They’re curious about themselves and how they’re wired. But often, the expectations are specific and practical.
- “When is Mr. (or Ms.) Right going to show up?
- “Is my career going to take off this year?”
- “Is there a move in my future?”
I’m all about spirituality making a difference in the everyday grind. If astrology (or any other spiritual path) doesn’t help us live in healthier, more fulfilling ways, then why bother? One of the primary critiques that skeptics level against spiritual practices goes like this: “None of that has any affect. You just think it does. But it’s all in your head.” Yet, you and many others can point to experiences of inexplicable synchronicities, connection, and knowing. Or when the chains of our destructive patterns suddenly fall away, and we finally step into our power and gifts. I believe this kind of seismic, inner change is the over-arching purpose of astrology. Your birth chart gives you a map to your soul’s potential and calls you forward into a grand adventure of deep emotional and spiritual growth.
But wait, isn’t astrology about predicting the future? That can be a trick question. Remember those old readers, Choose Your Own Adventure? At multiple points, you could pick from a half dozen different story lines and endings. Well, which iteration of “you” will you be in six months? And which future will that new “self” choose? A job change may indeed be in your future. Yet, tackling some of your negative beliefs around self-worth will inherently shift what kind of job you think you can get and consequently, which job postings you respond to. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” And every single day you have hundreds of choice points. In each moment, you get to ask yourself, “Who do I want to be now? What will I create?”
One of the beauties of astrology is that it offers an inexhaustible supply of guidance for making these kinds of daring shifts. Shifts that will improve your relationships, work, financial situation, etc. Transiting planet locations (where the heavenly bodies are this exact moment, not just the moment of your birth), help astrologers like me can pinpoint your crucial windows of opportunities as well as potential challenging periods.
- Do you want to start dating but feel anxious? There’s a six-week period ahead when you can risk more vulnerability.
- Are you looking to make a job change? Looks like the next three months could bring you extra discernment and willpower to make a more courageous choice than you had planned. Go for it!
- About that move: there’s a big alignment going on indicating a need for stability. You might want to re-think putting your house up for sale until next year.
