The month of November is about GRATITUDE. What is gratitude? It is an emotion that is directly connected to our ability to feel and express appreciation and thankfulness for individuals, situations, and things in our lives. Scientific studies have shown that gratitude is strongly associated with our mental health. Robert Emmons began studying gratitude in 2007 through a psychological lens. he found that when we express gratitude in our life, it improves our mental, physical and relational well-being. It has also been found to directly impact our experience of happiness in our lives. 

Some of the benefits of living a life of GRATITUDE include:

  • Improved health in our physical, emotional and mental bodies of well-being
  • Improved sleep, immune systesm and physical health
  • Increased happiness, joy, optimism and overall satisifaction of life
  • Increased energy levels, productiviyt ad success levels of life
  • Elevated spirituality, empowerment and self-esteem
  • Expanded willingness for forgiveness and letting go
  • Express more positive emotions including compassion and kindness

WAYS TO LIVE A LIFE OF GRATITUDE

One of the most common ways that people express gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal or by using a daily ritual of gratitude every day. Gratitude can be as simple as a delicious meal or dessert or as big as moving into your first home or welcoming a new member to your family. Gratitude should be a daily practice within your life.

I believe that most individuals are always thankful for their family and the relationships in their lives, but they may not express their gratitude. The effort of writing down every day, "I am thankful for my family" may not keep you in a state of gratitude or have as much as an impact as being more specific each day. The power of gratitude is getting into the habit of finding specific things and moments of gratitude each day. This ritual allows you to really think about what you are grateful for each day.

You can also make it FUN! What about getting a mason jar to hold all of your moments of gratitude. You could write down on a piece of paper what you are grateful for each day. The mason jar would collect these moments for you and on New Year's Day, you could take time to read each one out loud to remember your year of gratitude in a sweet ceremony. 

You might choose to make next year a "YEAR OF GRATITUDE" for everyone that is special in your life. You could select a couple individuals each month to honor a special way, to show how grateful you are to have them in your life. This could be done with a small gift, a personal card, a fun meal at home or out, or a simple not that states how grateful you are to have them in their life. 

There are hundreds of ways to be in GRATITUDE. The key is to make the effort to find the time in your life to express your gratitude for life each and every day. It does not have to be a BIG deal. The simple efforts of gratitude are just as powerful.
