Using Essential Oils for Colds & Seasonal Allergies
Essential oils can be used as an alternative or complimentary treatment for allergy symptoms. These oils are derived from plants and they are a natural resource that can be used in many different ways. Some of the most popular uses are:
- Diffusing the oils into the air
- Adding the oils to your bath
- Apply the oils to the skin after they have been diluted with a carrier oil
- Breathing in the oils from the container
When you breath in the oils, this process is known as aromatherapy. There are many benefits to aromatherapy including: stress & anxiety reduction, mood shifter, energy boost, mental focus, improved sleep, and relaxation.
Some of the best essential oils for allergy symptoms are:
Copaibahas the ability to reduce pain and inflammation, protects against infections and boosts respiratory health. It is a powerhouse as an antiseptic and expectorant for respiratory tract infections.
Lavenderhas anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties. This will assist with soothing swollen, irritated sinuses and nasal passages. The relaxing aroma will assist with easing the pain and pressure.
Lemonwill boost your immune system. It is anti-infectious, anti-bacterial, anti-viral & anti-septic. These properties work to promote white blood cell formation, improving your body’s natural immune functions.
Peppermintclears nasal passages and relieves the stuffiness. It acts as a powerful decongestant and expectorant. It has anti-bacterial properties to assist in the symptoms becoming more serious. The uplifting aroma is a great mood lifter when you are feeling bad.
Frankincenseis a powerful expectorant and immune system support. Adding this oil with the other oils, it provides a powerful boost of allergy relief.
Allergy Rollerball Recipe
This a common recipe for individuals wanting an oil recipe for their allergies.
- 20 drops of Lemon
- 20 drops of Lavender
- 20 drops of Peppermint
Use a roller ball and add the drops of oil listed above. Filled the roller ball up with a carrier oil (olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.). Allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours. Apply the mixture to the bottom of your feet or the back of your neck.
NOTE: If you would like some additional power to your mixture, add 10 drops of Copaiba. This will transform your mixture into a powerhouse for reducing symptoms of allergies.
Allergy Diffuser Recipe
You can create an “allergy bomb” to assist you with the symptoms of allergies. When you start experiencing sneezing, itching, water-eyes and stuffy-headed symptoms, start diffusing these oils around you.
- 3 drops of Lemon
- 3 drops of Lavender
- 3 drops of Peppermint
- 2 drops of Frankincense
Breathe Easier Diffuser Recipe
This diffuser recipe will assist you in breathing easier.
- 3 drops of Eucalyptus
- 3 drops of Peppermint
- 3 drops of Rosemary
Sinus Bath Recipe
You can add the following ingredients to your bath for sinus relief.
- 1 cup Sea Salt
- 1 cup Epsom Salt
- ½ cup Baking Soda
- 7 drops peppermint oil
- 7 drops eucalyptus oil
Breathe in the aroma from the oils.

Eucalyptusis most well-known for easing congestion and pressure, colds, flu, fever and bronchitis. It is a great oil to improve breathing. It will improve respiratory health.
- You can dilute this oil with a carrier oil and rub it on your chest to relieve cough symptoms from the common cold and flu. It will assist in breaking up the mucus in your chest.
- You can diffuse this oil and inhale the steam to open breathing passageways from asthma and sinusitis.
Tea Tree is a germ fighting powerhouse. It is known for is potent antiseptic, antimicrobial and antiviral properties.
- You can dilute this oil as a cough remedy by applying to your sinuses and neck area.
Immune System Support Rollerball Recipe
This recipe will assist in boosting your immune system.
- 10 drops Thieves
- 5 drops Frankincense
- 5 drops Thyme
- 5 drops Oregano
Use a roller ball and add the drops of oil listed above. Filled the roller ball up with a carrier oil (olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.). Allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours. Apply the mixture to the bottom of your feet or the back of your neck daily
Flu Shot Rollerball Recipe
This recipe will assist with flu symptoms. The CDC says you should get a flu shot be the end of October. It takes up to two weeks after the shot before you are protected and the shot only protects you against 3-4 strains of flu. This can be a supportive way to strengthen your immune system against flu strains and viruses.
- 15 drops Lemon
- 15 drops Thieves
- 15 drops Oregano
- 10 drops Tea Tree
Use a roller ball and add the drops of oil listed above. Filled the roller ball up with a carrier oil (olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.). Allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours. Apply the mixture to the bottom of your feet or the back of your neck daily. You may apply the mixture to the center of your chest and you can apply every two hours.
Congestion Blend Diffuser Recipe
This diffuser recipe will assist you in relieving congestion.
- 3 drops of Peppermint
- 2 drops of Eucalyptus
- 2 drops of Tea Tree
- 1 drop of Lemon
Fight a Cold Diffuser Recipe
This diffuser recipe is a great combination for fighting a cold.
- 4 drops of Lemon
- 4 drops of Tea Tree
- 4 drops of Lavender
