Finding Your Joy
Do you have joy in your life? Do you know how to find your joy?
What is joy? Joy is defined as a feeling of great pleasure. My husband and I have this on-going debate about happiness versus joy. He believes that we can experience happiness easily, but it is difficult for any of us to experience joy. I, personally, believe that experiencing joy is a choice. Each of us needs to be open to the possibility that we can experience joy if we choose. Most individuals have experienced moments or glimpses of joy throughout their lives.
Joy may have been experienced at:
- The first dance at your wedding with your partner
- The first time that you held your child and/or grandchild
- The first connection that you had with a puppy or kitten
- The achievement of a big accomplishment and/or goal
- And, so much more
Do you remember what joy feels like?
It is important to understand that you cannot wait for joy to happen. You must choose joy for your life. You have new opportunities to create joy in your life every day. These are opportunities to shift your perspective on life and to focus on the positives.
Make a list of the positives in your life
There are individuals that dream of winning the lotto every day. They dream of living on a tropical island where someone serves them breakfast every morning as the sunrises over the ocean. These dreams are often so impossible to reach. These dreams continue to overwork, overstress, and overpush themselves without coming closer to their dreams. While daydreaming can be lovely, and is a powerful manifestation technique, an over-focus on lack is counterproductive and will keep you from enjoying your life right now. If you are struggling to identify what there is to be happy about today, make it a practice to list out the positives in your current life so you can feel gratitude, peace, and joy about where you are instead of spending all your time looking forward.
Add a slice of happiness to your daily life
Find ways to smile on a daily basis. Give yourself an opportunity to add slices of happiness to your life throughout the day. Don’t wait for the winning lotto number.
Find time and ways to nurture yourself
Commit to a set routine to love and nurture yourself on a regular basis. What do you do for yourself habitually? It is so easy to love and care for everyone else and most of us cannot stop caring for others, but we do not always do a great job when considering our own needs or nuturing ourselves.
Some easy ways to nurture yourself:
- Allow yourself to sleep until you wake up
- Give yourself permission to take a nap
- Get regular massages, pedicures, and facials
- Spend special time with the ones that you love
- Hang out at home in fuzzy, comfortable clothes
- Hang out with your favorite furry friend
- Listen to inspiring and uplifting music, movies, etc.
Celebrate the small victories
Celebrate the small victories. It is important that you create a way to pause and celebrate the baby steps in your life. The small steps will always lead to the bigger steps. Take a moment to celebrate and be grateful for the small things will lead to a more joyful life. These habits will bring in more inner peace, contentment, and joy. The truth is that the small things in life may be the most important and they are the path to the larger milestones you seek.
Laugh and dance more each day
Find a way to laugh and dance more in your life. When you laugh, you reduce stress, improve your relationships, and enhance your immunity. Laughter is healing on so many levels. Why do we not laugh more in our lives? Take a moment to dance when no one else is looking. It is not about your ability to dance. It is more about getting into motion and moving your feet to the beat of the music.
Manage Your Thoughts
Change your thoughts and you will change your life. Pay attention to the recording that is playing within your mind. What are you saying to yourself all day long? Shift your thoughts to inspire, motivate, and encourage you in creating a joyful life.
Surround Yourself with Positive Relationships
Find healthy relationships with individuals that lovingly support you in your life. Are your friends supportive of you and your dreams? Make sure you surround yourself with positive people.
