Sacredness During the Thanksgiving Season
Sacredness During the Thanksgiving Season
While this year has not been great for most of us, and this Thanksgiving may look different than a traditional year or holiday, the blessing in this moment is the ability to slow down and examine our current holiday traditions. Is there a way to bring more sacredness into Thanksgiving or to improve your gratitude practice right now?
Here are some ideas of new ways to celebrate Thanksgiving and connect to your inner divinity:
Create a Thanksgiving Altar
Your altar can be simple or elaborate, but the process of putting together a harvest or seasonal altar will make the event feel more sacred while improving your connection to the divine.
Here are some beautiful examples of Thanksgiving altars you can use as inspiration:

Start Your Gratitude Practice
If you haven't begun a gratitude practice already, this year is the perfect occasion to begin! Whether it's a journaling practice, giving back, or committing to sharing your gratitude with others more, there is documented evidence that a gratitude practice can improve your physical and mental health.
Since you've probably already heard of the usual gratitude practice options (such as starting a gratitude journal, volunteering, and decorating for the holidays), here are some addiitonal ideas to consider for those who don't resonate with the popular choices.
- Gratitude Candle - Light a candle and spend time thinking about or writing down your blessings. If you participate in candle magic, here is a candle ritual you could use or adapt for yourself.
- Make a Gratitude Crystal Grid - Greate a crystal grid from a space of gratitude or to bring more gratitude into your life.
- Start a Gratitude Jar - On Thanksgiving day, begin a gratitude jar. Anytime you are feeling grateful for something in your life, write it down on a small slip of paper and put it in the jar. Next year, on Thanksgiving, set aside time to go through the jar and reflection on the year's blessings.
Essential Oils
The use of essential oils can immediately change the feel or mood of the room. The Mayo Clinic has stated that the use of essential oils can help with anxiety, depression, sleep, and can contribute to an improved quality of life for those with chronic health conditions. Specific oils are known to have additional benefits. If it does nothing but improve your mood, it may well be worth adding as a Thanksgiving tradition this year.
If you have a diffuser, there are dozens of autumn-themed or Thanksgiving inspired essential oil recipes you could use to enhance the holiday experience. Here are a few favorites:
While this Thanksgiving may feel different than in the past, it's also the perfect opportunity to incorporate new traditions or rituals into your holiday season to make the day more sacred and meaningful for you.
