The Sacred Altar
What calls us to the altar? Why are we drawn to the sacredness of the altar?
I have always loved the magic and sacredness of the altar. An altar is typically a raised structure that is created for prayers, meditations, rituals, and offerings.
Altars have been found in shrines, temples, churches, and other sacred places. They have been used in gatherings, ceremonies, and worship in Pagan, Christian, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judasim, and Modern Paganism communities.
The altar is a representation of your inner connection to source. It allows us to honor ourselves and our belief systems. The design and structure of your altar hold powerful energies.
Foundation of Your Altar
Start with the foundation of your altar. It should be on a flat or raised surface. Your altar can be created on a table, dresser, buffet/server, shelf, trunk, cedar chest, tree stump, etc. You can be as creative as you want to be with finding the perfect piece for your altar.
Your altar will be the perfect place for you to dedicate time daily for your prayers, meditations, gratitude rituals, etc. The placement of your altar is important. Find a special place that allows you to spend time connecting within and to source. The more and more energy work you do consistently in the same space, the easier it will become for you to connect as the energy builds over time.
Items for Your Altar
What is your intention for the altar? If the altar is a representation of your inner connection and beliefs, what would be items that would represent the best of you? Some of the items you can place on your altar include:
- Special objects: a photo of you, an art piece that was made for you, a piece of jewelry from a family member, etc.
- Sacred objects: statues, crosses, angels, prayer beads, rosaries, sacred geometry, dragons, fairies, etc.
- Elemental objects: spirit animals, crystals, shells, herbs, candles, essential oil, holy water, incenses, resin, etc.
An altar can be very simple, and it is not limited to the indoors. You can create an altar in your favorite outdoor spot with dried herbs, flowers, stones, twigs, berries, crystals, etc.
Creating an altar can be so much fun! You can design and create an altar that represents you and your life. It should be beautiful and special to you. When was the last time you created something really special for yourself? I challenge you to create an altar and to spend some time connecting to your inner divine self. It will change your life.
The Sacred Priesthood students begin to work with altars and they learn the mechanics of creating sacred altars within their homes and space. Find out more about the Sacred Priesthood program here.
