Your inner child is part of your subconscious. It has been picking up messages from you and your environment before it was able to fully process them. This little voice within you holds emotions, memories, and beliefs from the past, as well as the hopes and dreams of the present time. 

What were your dreams when you were a little boy or little girl? How did you see the world? Children are always taking in all the experiences that are happening around them. They are listening to the conversations, interactions, and emotions of the individuals in their lives. 

This consciousness remembers: 

  • The smell of their favorite meal cooking in the kitchen.
  • The argument that their parents had over mowing the lawn. 
  • The birthday party that they did not get invited to and the party that their friends did not come to.
  • The family vacation that had so many wonderful memories. 

Your inner child is part of you throughout your entire life. They show up within when you experience:

  • Your teacher reacting to a question you asked in class and her reaction made you feel dumb.
  • Gaining a friendship from a neighbor and you both loved the same things.
  • Your first presentation with your department and you wanted everything to be perfect. However, the presentation was not received well. 
  • Spending the day with your grandparents and they had you picking berries from the garden. 
  • The boyfriend that broke up with you to hang out with your best friend. 

Your inner child holds amazing memories and some that are not so amazing. These experiences may create triggers that show up in your relationships and experiences. These reactions come from that inner child within trying to protect you and your heart. 

Loving Your Inner Child

Your inner child loves you unconditionally. They want you to have all your dreams and desires. You can build an amazing relationship with your inner child and heal many of the wounds of the past. 


Be aware when you are emotionally or mentally triggered within an experience. Your inner child is communicating with you. Pay attention to that little voice within:

  • What does the little one need to feel safe?
  • What does the little one need to feel loved? 
  • What were their dreams?
  • How does the little one want to be treated? 
  • How does the little one want to be a part of your life?

Listen to Your Inner Child

Spend time playing, laughing, dancing, and singing with your inner child. Build a relationship by connecting with them on a regular basis. Begin to listen to them and learn about their needs, pains, wounds, hopes, and dreams. Start moving towards supporting their dreams. Find the time to experience things they always wanted to experience. 

Support Your Inner Child

Acknowledge them when they show up in your life. Make sure that they feel safe and supported by you. You may need support in the healing process, so seek assistance in healing the wounds of the past.
