Business Corner: Before You Hang Your Shingle

Are you ready to start your own spiritual business? 

When you first connect with your spiritual gifts, you are excited and ready to share your gifts with the world. You see other gifted spiritual leaders sharing their gifts and you dream of that success for yourself as well. Before you hang your shingle, you need to understand that you are starting a business. When you are offering services and classes at our center or anywhere else, it is the first step in starting your own business and it will require you to nurture and work on all the elements of a business.

First Step: What is your business? 

The first step requires you to define your business. It is important that you understand your business and where you want to go with it. Take a moment and think about these questions:

• What is the purpose of my business?
• What is the goal of my business?
• Who will be the clients of my business?
• Where will I find clients for my business?
• How will I attract clients for my business?
• Where am I going with my business?

Have you ever started a home party business? There are so many of these types of businesses. You get excited about the product and you decide that you want to be a distributor. You purchase the starter kit, and it arrives at your home. It is fun and exciting to unpack all the items in the kit. You schedule your first parties or promotions with family and friends. There are some people that are really good at these businesses and they become top sales in their area. They win trips and prizes. There are others that cannot seem to get past their family and friends. Their family and friends begin to avoid them because they have purchased everything they wanted and are not interested in attending another party.

The key is that building a business takes work and creativity. You must be able to find new clients past your inner circle and you must understand your audience base. Your are building a business.

This is very similar to the individuals that rent practitioner rooms or classroom space at our center. It is work building your business. Potential clients and students make decisions about scheduling an appointment and/or class based on their personal connection with the individual. In order to build that connection, you must be actively promoting and marketing yourself to the community. New business owners cannot rely solely on Discover Your Spiritual Gifts (DYSG) to feed their business. The most successful business owners at DYSG work their business on a regular basis. They attract their own clients and students and the ones that come from DYSG are a supplement, not a solution.

What is the purpose of your business?

A key question is: What is the purpose of your business? I have found that there are many reasons for individuals to start their own business. Some of these reasons include:

• I need money for myself and my family
• I want to make lots of money
• I want to prove myself to my family
• I want to show that I can be successful
• I want to give to others
• I want to be of service to others
• I want to improve the lives of others

Okay, you may answer the question by thinking that you want to achieve all of these outcomes. However, the truth is that you divide your attention and efforts with you select all of them. You need to be very clear on your purpose for your business. The key is to continue to reset and focus on your purpose: every year, every month, every week, and every day. Each of these purposes has different energies and attracts different results for your business.

By this time on your spiritual journey, you should have a good understanding of how energy works. Each individual has their own energetic imprint from their own experiences, belief systems, words, thoughts, emotions, etc. This energetic imprint attracts like energies into your everyday experiences. If you are clear on who you are and where you are going, you will attract people, situations, and experiences in your life that align with you. The same holds true for a business!

If you are seeking money and fame, you may not be as successful with your business because if your heart does not align with that purpose. Business owners that are passionate about their purpose and have a clear focus are more successful than business owners that are scattered, disconnected, and unfocused.
