Business Corner: Setting a Clear Direction for your Business

Where are you going with your business?

Some business owners lose their way because they have not set a clear direction for their business. Many of us have worked for organizations that had posters and signs throughout the office stating the organization’s mission, vision, and value statements. The real disconnect was that the organization did not live up to their mission, vision, and value statements. They spent money and time creating and launching them, but they did not really breathe life into them. It is very similar to small business owners that have not set a clear direction for their business.

Being Clear with your Business

What do I mean about being clear? Have you ever noticed that you have to be very clear and specific with your intentions? The universe is paying attention to your thoughts, words, and actions. You are the magical creator of your own world and you create your reality every day. If you are thinking about all that is wrong in your life, you will continue to create it over and over again. If you are focused on all the things that you are grateful for, you will create more of those things in your life. Your business will work the same way.

I learned a long time ago that I had to be very careful about what I would say in casual conversations to people around me. When we first opened the center in 2017, I would casually tell people in the center that we would be expanding the center in the Spring. When I was sharing this information, I was thinking about the expansion that would come in the Spring of 2019. However, the universe heard me and we ended up expanding the center in the Spring of 2018. I had not even realized that I created that reality until one of my practitioners told me that I had been telling everyone that it would happen in the Spring.

What are you thinking about your business? Are you worried about the business or your ability to grow the business? It is natural for you to be concerned and worried about your business. The key is to shift the worry. Every time you think or state something about your business that creates concern or worry, you must state or think about a positive outcome for the business. For example, “Tom, I believe that the center is going to be exploding with business next Spring and it is going to continue to grow over time. I feel like that this time next year, we will be achieving our goals and seeing a solid return on our efforts.” I emotionally feel the excitement of the success and visually see it in my mind.

One more thought about being clear . . . have you ever asked or stated something that came true, but it was not exactly what you were hoping for? Let me share an example with you. Have you ever had a time in your life when you were working in overdrive and you were feeling the pressure of life’s expectations? Your energy levels were extremely low, and you were wishing for some time off. And, the universe grants your wish with a cold or flu. You are forced to stay in bed and rest, but you were really hoping for a vacation or weekend getaway.

Make sure that you are very specific and clear with your words, thoughts, and actions.

Setting Direction for your Business

Your business needs a map or a direction to go in order to create the best success. If you show up for your business and do not have direction, the universe is not going to be able to assist you in reaching the stars. When you are setting direction, you should consider these questions:

  • What will be a realistic goal for starting my business? (having 2-3 clients a month, having 2 clients a week, etc.)
  • What is a measurable goal that you would like to achieve? (three clients a month, two readings a day, etc.)
  • How will you define your success for the business? (business revenue of $300 a week, business revenue of $500 a month)

Some great tools for setting clear direction is the SMART goals that business owners use for their business. The SMART goals are defined as:

  • Be Specific: Make sure you are specific in what you are reaching for. Example: I am going on vacation to Orlando, Florida in June for 7 days.
  • Be Measurable: Make sure that you have measurable goals. Example: I will be attending the workshop on Wednesday, March 19th at 2 pm. My goal is to attract 2 new clients.
  • Be Attainable: Make sure your goals are attainable. Example: I am going to make $10K this year working part-time on my spiritual business.
  • Be Realistic: Make sure your goals are realistic. Example: I will have an average of 2 clients a month for the first three months of my business.
  • Be Timely: Make sure your goals are timely. Example: I will achieve having 2 long term clients after 6 months.

NOTE: These are not recommendations. These are only examples. Everyone will have different directions depending on the time invested, money invested, and their ability to successful manifest and build their business.

Can you be successful as a spiritual business owner? Yes, absolutely. You need to understand that you will not be successful overnight. It takes time and, for some, it can take a few years before they reach solid success. It requires that you work at it every day. The one thing that I have noticed in my center over the years is that the energy of the center requires that our practitioners (spiritual business owners that rent space in the center) step in and commit to the space. The space requires that the practitioners spend time in the space and commit to being there before the space will effectively support their business. The practitioners that come and use the space only for their appointments have limited success at the center. Those who are committed to their business and space, will spend 3-4 hours a day in the center working on their business and connecting with the individuals at the center. I am at the center meeting and connecting with people even on days that I do not have clients or classes.
